A look back at the highlights of our first two years
Whew! Two years has flown by.
We’ve been honored to share in so many wonderful pregnancies and births since our grand opening in September 2015.
As we continue to learn and serve the women of our area, we’re also celebrating this special “birthaversary” season by sharing some of our favorite memories and moments with each other.
Now we’d love to share them with you!
The birth center facts and figures
Though each woman and baby have a story that can’t be contained in a mere number, we can’t help but marvel at the way The Retreat birth center has allowed us to serve so many.
Since our opening two years ago, we’ve had the pleasure of providing care for:
- 110 birthing mothers
- 105 singleton births
- 5 twin births
- 15 VBAC births (single, double, triple, and quad)
As we live in a city and state with one of the highest cesarean section rates in the U.S., we each feel especially honored to offer women a birth center that has the experience to give them a safe birth with respect for their desires and preferences.
“It’s amazing the power of the women we serve, and the support of the community that we live in. So many women come to us not knowing they have options outside of the hospital for their births. We are able to support these women and help them to achieve the birth experience that they desire,” says David Carter-Plake, assistant midwife (second from right in the photo).
Here are some of our favorite memories and lessons learned
We’re proud of what we offer to El Paso and border area women
“I can still remember the very first phone call I had with Lynn Arnold. She was describing this space as somewhere that welcomed everyone seeking an empowering and supported birth experience with resources to help them achieve their birth goals, no matter what those goals looked like,” says Lety Knight, doula.
“I feel so fortunate and proud to be a part of what the Retreat has offered the borderland’s birthing community: a safe, empowering, supportive, and welcoming space for every prenatal, birthing, and postpartum journey,” says Lety.
We’ve become a wonderful team
“Some of my favorite memories at The Retreat are attending our twin births. I love having all of us work together, everyone fulfilling their role and witnessing the miracle of birth in duplicate! I especially loved watching Lynn’s skill when she needed to perform a podalic version,” says midwife Annie Kuntz.
“There are funny moments, like Jeanna and I imagining David falling into the tub, or Kathrine almost having her baby in the hallway!” says Annie.
We have given women options they wouldn’t have otherwise
“Oh my gosh, my favorite memories as a doula at The Retreat are without a doubt assisting with a natural twin and natural breech birth. There is no other birth facility that could have given me that!” says Rachel Curtis, doula.
“The most precious thing about those was what the families got — peaceful births, experiences that were all theirs, and confidence in those mothers and their bodies. That can never be taken from them, and I feel extremely blessed to have been a small part of it,” says Rachel.
We honor women and their births, no matter how they unfold
“Compassionate and safe midwifery care means transfers (to a hospital) can happen, and they can be peaceful, non-emergent supported decisions between birth teams and families,” says Amissa Metcalf, doula.
“This kind of compassionate midwifery means excellent, family-centered care that prioritizes a healthy mom and a healthy baby physically, but it also protects their mental and emotional health, and respects the birth experience at the highest level,” says Amissa.
