A look at personal, gentle whole-pregnancy care at The Retreat
Something exciting is always going on at The Retreat.
Each of the midwives who works with The Retreat puts their whole heart into serving each woman and baby pair who join us.
It’s a special treat when we find out one of our moms is carrying two babies instead of one!
Veronica and her beautiful family began prenatal care with us when she first learned she was pregnant, and along the way she was pleasantly surprised to discover she was expecting twins.
Here is a glimpse of her journey through the pregnancy, and a look at how we provide personal, empowering prenatal care at The Retreat.
Home is where the heart is
Veronica and her husband Gerardo describe themselves as “kind of hippy,” preferring to live a healthy, natural lifestyle with their four children, ages 3-13, and their chickens!
Their family enjoys a close homeschooling relationship and both parents are happy to keep their work close to home, with their home-based business.
“Our family started a journey toward natural health about six years ago. I didn’t want to deal with the hospital policies and protocols. We don’t vaccinate, and we limit medical intervention unless it’s needed.”
A natural lifestyle and a natural birth plan
Her first three births took place at the hospital, but after their transition toward a more natural lifestyle, Veronica felt compelled to have her fourth baby via a natural birth at Maternidad La Luz in El Paso.
“I was terrified of natural birth, but I used Hypnobabies home study and it was great for changing my mindset. It helped me have confidence and rid myself of fear. It was the best birth I’ve had, and it made me want to try it all over again,” says Veronica.
When Veronica began her prenatal care at The Retreat, she envisioned a peaceful, personal, and, of course, natural birth.
A change of plans, and a natural twin birth on the horizon
Veronica and Gerardo chose to have their fifth baby at The Retreat, and began prenatal care with Lynn Arnold, LM,CPM, who founded The Retreat and specializes in special circumstances like twin birth, VBAC, and breech births — though at the time they didn’t realize it was possible to deliver twins there.
After about six weeks of warm, empowering prenatal care at The Retreat, Veronica and Gerardo were elated to find out they were expecting twins, and worried that carrying multiples would require them to transfer care to a hospital.
Lynn and Assistant Midwife David Carter-Plake assured them they could have the natural twin birth they desired right at The Retreat!
At The Retreat prenatal care is just as important as the birth
“They made me feel super comfortable about having the twins there. They were very excited and confident, and I was at total peace about birthing there. Lynn and David are very informative, and they answer all my questions. I never feel like I’m going through a high-risk pregnancy,” says Veronica.
Whether you’re expecting a singleton or twins, The Retreat believes personal prenatal care is just as important as the birth experience, and they provide each client with individualized education, counseling, and care throughout the whole prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum journey.
Prenatal appointments are unrushed, and questions are always addressed with respect. Mothers are encouraged to use informed consent to make their own decisions about what courses of testing and treatment are best for their situation and family.
It’s the perfect fit for a health-conscious family like Veronica, Gerardo, and their four (soon to be six!) children.
